After inviting nominations from all eligible members of the World Values Association, a Nomination Committee proposed a list of candidacies for offices in the Executive Committee and Scientific Advisory Committee.
After inviting nominations from all eligible members of the World Values Association, a Nomination Committee consisting of Hans-Dieter Klingemann, Ronald Inglehart, and Christian Haerpfer proposed a list of candidacies for offices in the Executive Committee and Scientific Advisory Committee, at the General Membership Meeting on March 20, 2013, in Doha, Qatar. Three additional names were proposed and added to this list, after which the 27 eligible members present in Doha elected six out of the nine candidates as members of the new Executive Committee—in keeping with the Constitution of the World Values Survey Association. With 27 possible votes, 14 votes is the threshold for majority support for a given office. In alphabetic order, the six elected members of the Executive Committee include:
Haerpfer, Christian (nominated for Member at Large): 23 votes
Moreno, Alejandro (nominated for Vice-President): 25 votes
Norris, Pippa (nominated for Treasurer): 17 votes
Ponarin, Eduard (nominated for Member at Large): 17 votes
Puranen, Bi (nominated for Secretary General): 26 votes
Welzel, Christian (nominated for President): 16 votes
In addition to the six elected members of the new Executive Committee, Ronald Inglehart and Jaime Díez-Medrano are Ex-officio members based on their functions as Founding President and Archive Director. These eight people constitute the new Executive Committee for a regular four-year term.
By unanimous and open block vote, the eligible members at the General Membership Meeting elected the candidates listed below to the following offices of the Scientific Advisory Committee:
Marta Lagos -- Chair
Darwish Al-Emadi -- Co-Chair
Juan Díez-Nicolas -- Vice-Chair
Yilmaz Esmer -- Vice-Chair
Linda Luz Guerrero -- Member
Ian McAllister -- Member
Catalina Romero -- Member
Renata Simienska -- Member
David Rotman -- Member
Seiko Yamazaki -- Member
The new Scientific Advisory Committee has a regular term of two years.
Inaugural Meeting of the Executive Committee
The newly constituted Executive Committee held its inaugrual meeting on the evening of March 20, 2013, at the Al-Rayyit Hotel in Doha/Qatar. At this meeting, the members of the Executive Committee unanimously elected the following officers for a four-year term of office:
Christian Welzel -- President
Alejandro Moreno -- Vice-President
Bi Puranen -- Secretary General
Pippa Norris -- Treasurer
Christian Haerpfer -- Member at Large (with an amendment)
Eduard Ponarin -- Member at Large
The Executive Committee voted unanimously to propose a constitutional amendment to make it possible for Christian Haerpfer to be elected Vice-President, alongside Alejandro Moreno. This initiative is part of an effort to distribute the responsibilities among the various officers more broadly and to define them more clearly. The next meeting of the Excutive Committee will be dedicated to this topic, among other things. The meeting will be hosted by Pippa Norris and will take place on May 17, 2013, at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA.
The Executive Committee expresses its gratitude to all who attended the Doha meeting and particularly to its host—led by Darwish Al-Emadi on behalf of SESRI and Qatar University. We thank Catalina Romero and Shen Mingming for serving full terms of office on the Executive Committee. We are especially indebted to Juan Díez-Nicolas and Yilmaz Esmer for thirty years of dedicated service in the Executive Committee and to Ronald Inglehart, for founding, guiding, and inspiring the World Values Surveys since its inception. We wish all officers the best of luck in fulfilling their duties.
The Executive Committee of the World Value Survey Association
