Christian W. Haerpfer elected as the new president of the WVSA
Christian Haerpfer, Research Professor of Political Science at the University of Vienna, has been elected as the President during last WVSA Executive Meeting in substitution of Dr. Prof. Christian Welzel. Christian compromise is to lead the WVS ship towards a new era, and with the focus already set in the 7th wave that will start in 2018.

Professor Christian W. Haerpfer is Research Professor of Political Science at the Department of Political Science of the University of Vienna. Prof. Haerpfer is the Chair of IPSA Research Committee 17 “Comparative Public Opinion” since 2011. Activity of RC 17 is aimed at implementation and analysis of international cross-national research in political science and political sociology on the basis of comparative opinion surveys in North America, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Eurasia.
Prof. Haerpfer is the Founding Director of the Institute for Comparative Survey Research “Eurasia Barometer” in Vienna, Austria since 1991. Its main aim is to monitor political, social and economic transformations in the countries of post-communist Europe and post-Soviet Eurasia in the opinion of their populations. The network of “Eurasia Barometer” includes more than 25 countries and over 150 social and political scientists and social survey researchers. In his capacity as the Director of “Eurasia Barometer” Prof. Haerpfer is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Global Barometer Survey Group, which is the worldwide organization for comparative large-scale quantitative surveys consisting of Afro Barometer, Arab Barometer, Asian Barometer, Eurasia Barometer, and Latino Barometer.
Prof. Haerpfer has been Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, UK), Hebrew University Jerusalem (Israel), National University of Rwanda (Kigali, Rwanda), University of Kharkiv (Ukraine) and University of Salzburg (Austria). He has received fellowships from the Leverhulme Trust (London, UK), the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars (Washington D.C., USA), the European University Institute (Florence, Italy) and the University of Essex (UK).
Prof. Haerpfer is academic and public policy advisor for the United Nations, UNDP, World Bank, European Commission, EBRD and OECD. His main field of expertise constitute social and political transformations in transitional Post-Soviet and Post-Communist societies; political participation and democracy; social and political capital; support for democracy and other political regimes; political transition in countries of Middle East and North Africa. Prof. Haerpfer has over 200 publications in mentioned fields.
