First Meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the World Values Survey Association

The first meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee in wave 7 (2016-2020) took place on April, 13-14 in Taipei, Taiwan at the Center for East Asia Democratic Studies at National Taiwan University. The event was generously hosted and organized with the support of the Asian Barometer Survey.

The meeting was attended by Christian Haerpfer (Austria), Juan Diez-Nicolas (Spain), Bi Puranen (Sweden), Seiko Yamazaki (Japan), Linda Guerrero (Phillippines), Ian McAllister (Australia), and Kseniya Kizilova (Austria).

The scope of issues discussed by SAC members at the meeting included 

  • Preparation of WVS wave 7 and tasks of SAC in WVS-7;
  • Organizational structure of the WVSA: Regional Hubs;
  • Introduction of the SAC Methodology Group;
  • Questionnaire translation in WVS-7;
  • Elaboration of survey and methodological requirements for WVS-7;
  • Elaboration of methodological principles of sample design and requirements to sampling procedures for WVS-7;
  • Development of rules for national teams, principal investigators, supervisors and interviewers;
  • Development of survey fieldwork rules and quality requirements, data quality control procedures;
  • Requirements to the Data archive work on depositing and storage of the WVS-7 data.

The main outcome of the meeting is the collection of Rules and procedures for the WVSA Principal Investigators for wave 7 which wil be distributed after its final approval at the next WVSA meeting in July, 2016.

Scientific Advisory Committee is the second governing body of the Association (after the Executive Committee) whose main duty includes revision of substantive and methodological issues related to the research agenda of the WVS. The primary function of the Scientific Advisory Committee concerns maintaining technical standards to the highest level of scientific knowledge and developing the survey instrument for each wave. The Scientific Advisory Committee consists of leading social scientists and survey researchers, representing all regions of the world.

The next face to face meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Association is scheduled on July, 23, 2016 and will be held in conjunction with the IPSA Congress of Political Science in Poznan, Poland.
