PhD Program Democracy under Stress

SEVEN DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIPS within the framework of the doctoral program “Democracy under Stress” promoted by the Ministry for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony

Leuphana University of Lüneburg, foundation under public law, fosters the development of junior scientific staff. For this purpose, a total of 14 doctoral scholarships will be awarded – subject to the promise of funds - within the framework of the doctoral program “Democracy under Stress” promoted by the Ministry for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony.

In a first step seven doctoral scholarships (among them five Georg-Christoph- Lichtenberg-scholarships) should be occupied by 01.10.2016.

The invitation to apply for a scholarship is targeted at extraordinarily qualified young academics from political science and its neighboring disciplines, including sociology, psychology as well as environmental and media studies and law. Candidates have to be admitted to a doctorate by Leuphana University of Lüneburg and registered in the doctoral studies with the beginning of the doctoral scholarship. This is a formal and fundamental prerequisite to receive the doctoral scholarship.

The scholarships will initially be awarded for one year. Sufficient progress provided, the scholarships can then be extended upon request, adding up to a maximum of three years. Periods with alternative financial support prior to the scholarship will be taken into account, including periods of employment to conduct a PhD research project. No scholarship may be awarded to candidates who have already earned a doctoral degree.

The scholarship is - subject to the promise of funds - worth € 1,400 monthly plus € 100 for material resources. Besides working on the doctorate, additional occupational activities must not exceed eight hours per week in yearly average. Income from scientific activities below € 6,000 per year, as well as revenue from property are not taken into account. Income from nonscientific activities will be credited against the basic amount of the scholarship.

The prospective scholarship recipient is requested to conduct a dissertation project within the framework of the doctoral program “Democracy under Stress” at Leuphana University of Lüneburg. In addition, the scholarship requires a continuous and active participation in the program of study and the research colloquium. The prospective scholarship beneficiary is expected to have his or her place of residence in the region of Lüneburg/Hamburg.

Upon application, candidates should provide evidence of the following set of credentials:

- above-average university degree (M.A. or equivalent) in political science or a neighboring discipline / studies related to the spectrum of the engaged disciplines in the doctoral program;

- interest in both theoretical and empirical questions on democracy research as well as active participation in the doctoral program;

- excellent knowledge of English.
