Christian Welzel gives a lecture on moral progress and populism
WVSA Vice-President Christian Welzel gave a lecture on moral progress and populism at Haus der Begegnung in Innsbruck (Austria) on March 28.
The event was organized by Wissenschaft und Verantwortlichkeit and Haus der Begegnung.
Values in Change: Moral progress and the reaction of populism
The paper traces the basic lines of value change in the Western world. It particularly illustrates the rise of humanistic-emancipative values, which emphasize freedom of decision-making and equality of opportunity. These values have been shown to increase in the succession of the generations. However, some increasingly encapsulated population segments have been left behind by the caravan of value change in their traditionalist attitudes. These are now mobilized more appropriately and fiercely assert the right-wing populism in its rebellion against modernity and moral progress.
