Nigeria: First in Africa! WVS-7 completed in the first African country!

World Values Survey round 7 has been completed in the first country on the African continent – in Nigeria. The survey was conducted in December 2017 – January 2018 and was organized by Professor Bi Puranen from the side of the WVSA. WVS-7 fieldwork in Nigeria was conducted by TNSRMS Nigeria Limited; survey fieldwork was coordinated by Mariam Fagbemi; a total of 1237 interviews have been completed in Nigeria.

In addition to collecting data on social values, attitudes & stereotypes; societal well-being; social capital, trust and organizational membership; economic values; corruption; migration; post-materialist values; science and technology; religious values; security; ethical values and norms; political interest and political participation; political culture and political regimes, the survey in Nigeria also tested a number of country-specific items, including those on issues of ethnicity, community belonging and emigration. WVS-7 survey also tested in Nigeria the new survey module on gender norms and family planning which addresses a number of important issues, including primary role in decision-making on household issues, family expenses, marriage, sexual relations, contraception etc. The module therefore measures existing norms and practices established in Nigeria which regulate family life, health and wellbeing of all family members. WVS-7 survey in Nigeria as well as the pilot of the new gender module have been supported by the grant of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. WVS-7 data for Nigeria will be available at the WVSA web-site in 2020, after the end of the wave.
