WVSA participates in the Ulaanbaatar Democracy Forum on promoting and measuring SDG 16
On February 26-28, the World Values Survey Association participated in the Ulaanbaatar Democracy Forum 2019. Ulaanbaatar Democracy Forum (UBDF) 2019 was the second joint initiative of the Permanent Secretariat of the Community of Democracies (PSCD), Asia Democracy Network (ADN), and Asia Development Alliance (ADA) in partnership with the government of the Republic of Korea.

The UBDF 2019 was hosted by the Local Organizing Committee in Mongolia in partnership with the Mongolian government, National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia and the Center for Human Rights and Development (CHRD). UNDP and the Global Alliance for Reporting Progress on Peaceful Justice and Inclusive Societies joined the UBDF as a partner organizations.

The UBDF 2019 took place under the theme “Promoting Peace, Human Rights and Democracy through Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16+ - Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies in Asia and beyond”. The SDG 16+ indicates that SDG 16 is a stand-alone goal itself but need to be implemented as an integral part of the SDGs in connection with other goals in particular cross-cutting goals.

The main objectives of the UBDF 2019 were to review and share good practices of Asian governments and CSOs’ engaged in implementation and monitoring of the SDGs in particular the goal 16+; to strengthen collaboration and partnerships among multistake holders such as the government, international organizations, public institutions, CSOs, private business, etc. on goal 16+. About 60 international participants and over 30 local participants attended the Forum.

WVSA contributed to the discussion on monitoring the progress towards SDG16. WVS research program, conducted globally since 1981, offers a wide range of measures highly relevant as supplement indicators for monitoring SDGs. Head of the WVSA Secretariat Kseniya Kizilova presented WVS work and findings on measuring perceptions of security, corruption, gender equality, sustainable institutions and inclusive participation.
