FROM THE AUTHORITARIAN PERSONALITY TO THE AUTHORITARIAN REFLEX

Today I'd like to discuss something that I remember from my student days: the authoritarian personality. It's an oldie but goodie, something that has been around. for a very long time. The famous book The Authoritarian Personality was published in 1950. It has had ups and downs. Almost immediately after its publication it was criticized heavily and justly I would say. On one hand, the original theory behind The Authoritarian Personality was Freudian which was fashionable in the 1950s, but subsequent research did not uphold it very well-- in fact it has pretty much been fallen by the wayside. The theoretical basis was that harsh parenting practices lead to rebellion against the father and you wouldn't dare attack him, so you were subordinate to authority figures but repressive to the less powerful, and all so on and that is probably pretty much forgotten [...].
